Shannon gazed at Benjamin, and her eyes flickered with a mix of obscure emotions.
After some time, she asked, "You kept emphasizing you're not him. If that's the case, why do you insist I take this back?"
Benjamin's eyes darkened slightly as he said, "This was something he gave you, and I told you—I'd never take anything given to you."
"And I told you I don't want it." Shannon's voice was light and carried no trace of resentment. There was no hint of defiance like when she'd given up the stone. She'd been resolute and acted without hesitation.
Benjamin felt an unfamiliar emotion inside him. He wanted to say something but was temporarily speechless, knowing that wasn't the true reason.
In truth, he didn't have an answer to her question.
His heart had once rested on her and taken on her warmth. Now though it'd returned to him, it still felt incomplete.
