Chapter 9 A Strange Feeling

Sabrina awoke the next morning to find Curtis gone from the room, and the blanket on the couch had been neatly folded. Initially, she considered stashing the blanket away, but the thought of Daniel discovering it made her hesitate. Yet, with her recent marriage still fresh in her mind, she hesitated at the thought of sharing a bed with Curtis. Eventually, she decided to leave things as they were. When Sabrina emerged from the room, breakfast was already prepared by Daniel. This made her feel slightly embarrassed. She had promised to take care of Daniel, but here he was, serving her breakfast. "Come have breakfast with me," Daniel said, a warm smile on his face. "I may not be as skilled as you, but I can hold my own in the kitchen. My late wife used to love my cooking." Daniel had the habit of waking up early, and despite his age, he felt capable of making his own breakfast. Sabrina nodded politely, responding, "Let me handle breakfast from now on. You should focus on your well-being." Old age came with its share of ailments, and although Daniel wanted to take good care of her, naturally Sabrina also hoped that Daniel's health would improve too. The thought that Daniel, so full of life, could have just a year left the live was devastating. "What are you mumbling about? I'm fit as a fiddle! I could even go for a jog right now. Don't listen to Curtis's nonsense, I know my body best," Daniel dismissed, waving his hand as he motioned for Sabrina to join him at the table. Confused, Sabrina questioned silently whether Daniel was truly in good health. "So, how's the house sale going?" "It's listed on the market, but no inquiries yet. Maybe I priced it too high.” "Nonsense! Your house is in a great location with excellent accessibility. Just give it some time," Daniel reassured her, offering his honest opinion. Had the location not been so ideal, Daniel himself would not have settled there, much less become Sabrina's neighbor. They had just finished breakfast when Curtis returned from his daily morning jog. Dressed in sweats and a little sweaty, he entered the room. Both Daniel and Sabrina turned their heads simultaneously to look at him. Curtis felt a strange twinge of emotion. Living alone in the past, he had never experienced the warmth of family. Any needs he had were usually addressed by his assistant. Today, however, he returned home to find two people—his grandfather and his wife, at least in name—under the same roof. It was a strange feeling, like a feather lightly brushing over his heart, warming yet oddly ticklish. "Come have some breakfast. Grandpa made something delicious," Sabrina invited with a smile. Curtis acknowledged with a slight nod, then retreated to his room without a word. Daniel simply rolled his eyes, silently saying everything that needed to be said. "He's always been a quiet one," Daniel remarked. "Even as an adult now, you'd think his lips were glued shut. Don't worry about him. If he's hungry, he'll eat. If not, then so be it." Hearing this, Sabrina could not help but chuckle. Only a grandfather could say something like that. Having taken two days off, she had to go back to work today. She hurried through breakfast, grabbed her work essentials, and dashed out the door. Just as she stepped onto the street, a Maybach sped by her. In this modest neighborhood, such a luxury vehicle was indeed a rare sight and a spectacle. Sabrina wasn't typically nosy, but who would not be curious about a secret tycoon living in the neighborhood? * Sabrina held an administrative position in a tech firm. Her job involved a variety of tasks that were more time-consuming than challenging. Fortunately, her patience made her work relatively effortless. Before she even entered the office, her coworker Felicia Green approached and linked arms with her. "Sabrina, did you hear? The top boss from HQ is in the building. He might even be in the office right now." Sabrina gave Felicia a puzzled look. "Why would he be here? And why do you sound so thrilled?" Felicia looked at Sabrina as though she had just landed from Mars. "Don't tell me you forgot! There was that embezzlement scandal last quarter. The upper management found out about it, and our boss is livid. He's flown back from overseas personally to investigate this case." Of course, Sabrina was aware of the huge scandal that had resulted in a sweeping reshuffle of the company's senior management. "You won't believe it," Felicia continued, her eyes glinting with a mix of envy and desire. "Everyone got here early today, but no one's seen him yet. Word is, he's a young, dashing billionaire, someone who could snap up a small country just like that." The idea of a young, handsome, and wealthy man intrigued Sabrina's coworkers. "Don't get your hopes up,” Sabrina advised. "A man like that probably already has someone special." Felicia gave a slight pout. "Hey, I'm not plotting a fairy tale here. But if one actually happened, I wouldn't complain." Everyone was entitled to their own fantasies. Sabrina didn't judge people like Felicia for wanting to climb the corporate ladder through unconventional means. "Alright, but did you even catch a peek at this mystery boss?" Felicia let out a sigh. "Sabrina, were you even listening? None of us have seen him yet. But knowing our manager, he'll probably host a party to welcome the top boss. Maybe we'll get to meet him then." Felicia seemed hopeful, while Sabrina had zero interest in social mixers. She was there to work, plain and simple. "Watch out for Nina today; she seems off. Like I've told you before, I'm pretty sure she has her eyes on your boyfriend," Felicia whispered as they were about to enter the office. Without Felicia's reminder, Sabrina would have almost forgotten that she and Nina were coworkers.
