Mabel turned her head at this moment and met my gaze.
"Mrs. Parker." A flicker of surprise crossed her face.
When William saw me, his expression shifted, and an unreadable storm of emotions flashed across his features.
Mabel let out a sigh. "Mrs. Parker, I'll be going now."
I gave her a small nod. I had heard everything she said just moments ago.
"You've been through a lot," I said.
She hesitated, then took my hand and leaned in to whisper in my ear, "Mrs. Parker, listen to me. Once you leave this house, don't look back. It's not worth it."
"I know. Thank you, Mabel."
Hearing my response, she finally left, looking satisfied.
William took a moment to compose himself before speaking. "Charlie is upstairs. You should go check on him."
I turned toward the kitchen. "There's no need. I'll make the soup, then I'm leaving."
My back was to him, but I could feel his presence lingering behind me.
