"Ms. Whitman!"
Suddenly, Gary's excited little face peeked out from upstairs. He bounced down the stairs, full of energy.
"Slow down," I said with concern.
Gary ran up to me and wrapped his arms around my leg. "Are you feeling better?"
"I'm fine." I ruffled his hair, smiling gently. "Thank you for checking on me, Gary."
"Did you eat yet? Daddy and I kept your food warm."
"Not yet." I gave him a soft smile.
"Then… Then are you hungry? Can you wait a little before eating?"
His face was brimming with anticipation.
"Sure. Is there something you need, Gary?" I asked warmly.
"It's just a little thing."
He grabbed my hand, and the moment I looked down, something caught my attention. Two of his fingers were covered in colorful kids' band-aids.
"What happened to your hand?" Concern was evident in my voice.
But Gary simply grinned, unfazed. "It's nothing! Come with me."
He tugged me toward the couch and had me sit down.
"Can you hold out your hand? And close your eyes." Gary beame
