I didn't tell anyone what I was about to do—not even Tobias. Alone, I drove to the place where Fern had hidden the children all those years ago. This place wasn't new to me; it was located in a remote town, a bit far from the city—an off-the-beaten-path spot, perfect for Fern to hide both himself and his child.
The car bumped along the desolate countryside, with few people in sight and the occasional abandoned house. I had never realized how far this place was from civilization.
