The next day was Saturday and I had to wake up at six to be at work.
I worked at the local diner on weekends and usually I made enough in tips for it to be worth it. However, it wouldn't be enough for an apartment and a car when the baby came, not to mention all the other things a baby needed. I would have to hustle a little more.
It was packed in the diner when I arrived, most likely with people barely leaving the bar. I recognized the club attire immediately.
"Ezra, clock in and take table twelve." My manager, Eddie said immediately when he laid eyes on me.
I gave him a mock salute before following his orders.
I was extra nice today because I needed the tips.
When Eddie asked me if I wanted to leave at two, I shook my head, telling him that I could work a little longer. Next thing I knew it was five and I was almost finished working a double.
My feet were sore and my head was pounding but my apron pocket was full with tips so I was happy.
My mood immediately went sour when I saw Sin, King and another guy sat in my section.
I took a calming breath before walking to the table. I had never worked nights so I couldn't be sure if they had ever been here before or if King was just stalking me so he could blackmail me.
"Hey guys" I said with a fake smile. "What can I get for ya?"
King looked up from his menu. His eyes widened and he actually looked shocked to see me for an instant before his face transformed into a sick smirk.
"Well, lookie here." He said folding his hands in front of him. "I was just thinking about you."
I smiled brightly. "I bet. What can I get ya?"
Sin looked from me to King before shaking his head and looking back at his menu. "This year is so confusing." He mumbled.
King still had the smirk on his face. "Should you really be on your feet midget?"
Sin pretended to gag when he heard the nickname. I didn't blame him.
I frowned, cocking my head to the side. "If you're not ready to order I could come back." I said with a slight attitude.
The guy who I never met shook his head. "A short stack for me. Strawberries on the side."
I quickly wrote it down on my notepad.
"I'll take a glass of almond milk and a side of wheat toast. No butter." Sin said clearly.
I sent him a weird look. It was almost Seven at night.
"And I'll have the avocado burger. Curly fries on the side." King mumbled handing me his menu.
I snatched it out of his hands. "Coming right up." I said quickly before heading back to the kitchen.
"You're cut after that table." Eddie said as I put the order into the system.
I nodded. I was tired and I wanted to go home. I had made enough money today but it wouldn't be enough forever. I still needed to find a new job.
While I waited for their food, I cleaned my section.
I didn't like that King was here. I didn't know what he was going to say and he could say way too much.
When their food was up, I brought it to the table with a fake smile on my face. After placing everybody's food in front of them I turned to King.
"Can I talk to you for a sec?" I asked in a chipper voice.
He must have been expecting that because he immediately stood up, grabbing his burger and following me to the front of the restaurant.
"Can you chill with the pregnancy talk?" I said once we were in the clear.
He studied me, taking a bite of his burger and chewing slowly. "Alright. Sorry."
It took me by surprise. I was expecting him to be an asshole about it. I was planning on arguing. "What?" I said raising my eyebrows.
He smiled, realizing he caught me off guard. "I said I'm sorry. I'll chill."
I took a deep breath. "Okay, cool. I guess we're done then."
He moved in front of me when I tried to leave. "Hold on. Can I ask you a question?"
I groaned. "Okay..."
"Are you planning on telling him?" He was serious now, all amusement dropped from his face.
I could have told him to mind his business. But it was nice to have someone to talk to and he seemed like a cool person so I answered.
"I am. I just haven't found out how to do it. I don't want him to think I'm trying to trap him."
He looked confused and I rolled my eyes.
"Don't act like you haven't heard the story, King. Poor girl trapping the rich guy with eighteen years of child support. I don't want Kody thinking-"
"Stop." He interrupted, rubbing his head like he didn't understand what I was saying. "Are you serious?"
I shrugged. "Everyone will think so."
Before he could respond I held a hand up.
"I have to go. I'm still at work. See you around King."
"Give him some credit, Ezra."
I nodded my head as I walked away "I'm going to."
********************
I hadn't talked to Kody since the bar, so I decided to pop up at his house later that night.
It was a dumb idea, since it was ten o'clock on a Saturday night and he most likely wasn't even at home but I had already committed.
I dressed casually and warm since it was cold and I was taking the bus. My grey hoodie was a gift and the bright yellow 'Hawkins Elementary' made my features stand out.
The thick leggings were fashion nova because I was obsessed with their sales.
The outfit was paired with grey Air max 97's that had cost me a fortune.
I looked cute so I left my hair down. It would have been cute if the waves I had tried to do had worked out but they hadn't. So straight it was.
Walking up to Kody's complex, I could hear loud thumping music. I knew it was coming from Kody's unit and I immediately frowned.
I stood outside his front door, straightening my posture and knocking briskly.
I wanted to go home. I didn't want to deal with the asshole Kody became when he was around his friends. But if I didn't rip this whole 'I'm pregnant ' bandage off as soon as possible things would only get worse.
When the door swung open, I was actually surprised to see Kody instead of one of his goons.
"Damn it Lewis. What are you doing here?"
I could have just told him then. Just ripped the bandaid off. But I froze up and I panicked.
And I said something probably worse than 'I'm Pregnant'.
"King invited me." I lied. There was a lot of people packed inside his apartment.
Kody's eyes narrowed as he turned to look over his shoulder. "King!" He yelled.
I was already blushing. If King didn't play along then this would be beyond embarrassing.
King hustled up to the door, a look of confusion plastered on his face. He looked between me and Kody before scratching the back of his head. "Cap?"
Kody backed up pursing his lips and glaring at King before muttering, "I want her out of here."
And then he was gone, leaving me and a confused King alone.
King slowly nodded his head.
"I assume you're going to explain."
