Chapter 9
Over the next few days, Muse was really crushing on her uncle's house. Her life has become more difficult than in the past. Her uncle's wife and her lover Pen led her almost impossible life. Luckily he didn't try to rape her again. Besides going to school with almost no money to eat, Muse would have to come back and cook for everyone at home. She had become worse than a cleaning lady. She was treated like an exclave with no rights. His studies suffered seriously. His tormentors didn't give a fuck. They felt no pity for Muse. Worse still, they always found opportunities to say mean words to him. It was Muse who did the laundry for everyone at home, even for his uncle's older daughters who were his eldest. However, she was not complaining. She carried out these tasks without flinching, in the hope that she would pass her exam this end of the year. In fact, she was due to take this exam in two months. Despite the chores she struggled with all day long, Muse always found a little time very early at dawn to do her exercises and study her lessons. Although it was really hard for her to sacrifice herself like this, Muse knew it would be just just for a little while. In a few months, she could go to any college according to what her uncle had told her. It was therefore this hope of leaving his uncle's hellish house that animated him and gave him the nerve to surpass himself in order to succeed in his exam.
Sometimes, fate seems to come after us and play tricks on us against all odds. This was the case with Muse. At the dawn of a glimmer of hope, when she thought she was near the end of the tunnel, she was unaware that she was not yet at the end of her sentences. The events to follow were worse than she imagined. Muse counted the days, the weeks, impatient to take the baccalaureate exam. She gave everything she could to succeed. She had planned to return as soon as she had taken her exam. Only, she had not foreseen this bomb which awaited her with firm feet. Indeed, one day during the weekend, Muse was cooking for the whole family in the kitchen. His uncle's wife, along with his cousins and Pen were sitting in the living room watching television. All of a sudden, Muse feels nauseous. She rushes out to pour everything she ate this morning into the garbage bin. She didn't understand what was happening to her. Why does she suddenly start throwing up? However, she does not remember having eaten anything that could cause such discomfort. After she finishes throwing up, she wipes her mouth with the back of her hand thoughtfully. Turning around, she comes face to face with her uncle's wife who was watching her when she was vomiting. The latter was standing on the veranda, looking at her strangely. Muse does not understand the look she puts on her. Suddenly, his stepmother signals him with his index finger to come. Muse walks casually asking himself a thousand and one questions. What does this look still earn him? Yet she does not remember having done anything stupid these days. Arrived at the height / level of her uncle's wife, she scrutinizes her from head to toe, as if she were looking for some fault in Muse. In fact, the fact that Muse suddenly starts vomiting has him on edge / alerted. She understood that these are the symptoms of pregnancy. After observing Muse for quite a while, she asks him the very curious question.
"When was the last time you saw your period?" Muse tries to think back to remember this day, but it seems far away and she doesn't remember it.
"I don't remember that day." Replies Muse who does not understand why Pauline asks him this question.
"So are you so stupid to be unable to count your menstrual cycle? After that you say you're in 12th grade." Martine replies with a contemptuous look towards the poor little one.
"In fact, it's been over a month since I last saw my period." Muse said looking innocent.
Martine cannot believe her ears. His apprehensions turned out to be real. It only means one thing, Muse is pregnant and the author is none other than Pen his lover. Martine had not thought of this possibility at all. What is she going to do now? This is very terrible news. If Muse's uncle learned of this news, it would be over for Martine. Indeed, he will surely require him to say who is the author. Muse will end up confessing under threats from his uncl that it is Pen the author of her pregnancy. Then we'll know about the rape. Despite her efforts to suppress reality, Martine knew deep down that there was a good chance Muse had told the truth about Pen's rape. She was therefore afraid that the thing would be known. Because at the end of the day, truths about her could be revealed to everyone as well. And that, there is no way she would accept such a thing to take place. Pauline was prepared to resort to extremes in order to keep her misdeeds a secret.
Her heart pounding, Pauline ushers in Muse, who leaves to continue her household chores in the kitchen. She then takes Pen aside to update him on the situation.
"What's wrong darling? Why do you look so mysterious?" Pen He inquired when he found Pauline in her room.
"The hour is serious for us my heart. Things got more complicated." Pauline answered Pen while panicking. She was pacing the room, her face full of sweat. Pen didn't understand his panicked look. He stops her and forces her to sit on the bed. He then said to her in a calm tone
"Calm down my darling. What's going on? Why are you in this state? Explain to me calmly what's going on, okay?"
"Muse, that little witch ... She just told me she missed her period over a month ago." Pauline answered Pen. She was disturbed as she spoke. Pen on the other hand, was rather calm and saw nothing serious in the allegations of his lover.
"But it can happen to any girl her age, right ?! Besides, with the constant stress in which this little one lives in this house, it must have rubbed off on her menstrual cycle. Which could justify the irregularity of her periods. . I don't see anything alarming about that. It's only been a month since she saw her period. It's still manageable. " Pen reassured Pauline who does not seem to agree with him.
"I'm not a fool, my heart. I saw how her breasts swelled, her physique also shows signs of pregnancy. I am convinced that Muse is pregnant." She retorts convinced.
"Okay, here's what we'll do to remove any doubt about this matter. I'll go out right away to buy some pregnancy tests. So you'll have Muse do the pregnancy test and we'll see if your suspicions are founded. , or else it's just your imagination. " Pen he proposed to Pauline who is satisfied with this advice.
After eating his lunch, Pen waited for the sun to drop a little before heading to the pharmacy to buy pregnancy tests. He did find some at the first pharmacy where they stayed. He returns immediately to give the tests to Pauline who was anxiously awaiting them. In the evening when Muse was in his room, his stepmother comes to take the pregnancy test. Despite Martine's strong suspicions about Muse's pregnancy, she still hoped that her intuition had deceived her and that the test would come out negative. Muse was also very scared. She prayed that she was not pregnant. Otherwise, what would become of her life? Unfortunately for both women, the test turned out positive. Pauline used all three tests Pen purchased from Muse in hopes of seeing a change in the result, but all three were positive. Despite Muse's requests that Pauline explain how to read the test, the latter refused. Muse therefore did not know if she was pregnant or not. Pauline came out of her room looking utterly defeated. She immediately went to her lover's room. From the downcast look that Pen sees of Pauline, he understands at once that the latter's fear has finally materialized.
"So what are we going to do? ' He asks, becoming worried in his turn, Pauline throws herself on the bed very affected.
"This is your problem. You created it, you have to find the exits. If you had kept your tray closed, we wouldn't be in such a mess right now. No need to remind yourself that my husband could come home at any time. If he finds out this truth, we're done. " She looks defeated at him.
"We cannot take the risk of having her abort, lest she lose her life and the reasons for her death will be revealed. Then we would be in big trouble / faced with a bigger problem. problem. Besides that, threatening to shut up might not fix the problem in the long run. There is only one thing left for us to do to fix it at this point. " Pen said to Pauline, taking on a serious air.
"Ah yes? So what is this thing?" Pauline asks the question in a sharp voice, suddenly becoming more curious.
"We have to kick Muse out of this house this very night." Pen ruthlessly replied.
"Pardon? No, that's not a good idea. She would go straight to her classmate from the last time and tell her mother everything, who in turn will go and seize the principal and her school will get involved. We will then be caught up in the process. trap." Pauline replies by rebelling against the idea of Pen which she finds not considered.
"Who said we were going to leave her close by? We'll take her to another town, where she doesn't know anyone, and leave her there. So she won't be able to come back and put the sticks on us. in the wheels. " Pen explains his idea better to Pauline, who listens to it with all her attention.
"It's true that explained in this way, your idea is not bad at all." Pauline said to him, looking thoughtful.
"It's the best idea we can have right now." Pen said after her.
As they had planned, Pen and Pauline came to pick up Muse during the night as she sat on her study table doing her homework.
"What is happening ?" Muse asks them, looking at them in turn as if she wanted to read some answer to his concern on their faces. She suddenly gets scared / she gets scared all of a sudden. Indeed, she understands that these two must have a not very favorable idea behind the head for her.
Without bothering to answer Muse, Pauline takes Muse's suitcase and begins to take out her clothes from the dressing room and put them in the suitcase. Muse is afraid and wonders what his stepmother is up to for him this time again. Whatever it was, she had a firm feeling it was something wrong. When Pauline has finished loading Muse's suitcase with her things, she goes out with it without telling him anything. Pen, who had been standing at the doorstep since they first entered Muse's room, comes to carry Muse from his chair and goes out with her.
"Where are you taking me? Leave me please!" Muse said crying.
Pen puts her in the car in the backseat then locks the car doors. He then goes to help his lover put Muse's suitcase in the trunk. When they have finished putting the suitcase in the trunk, they come back to take their seats in front. Pauline turns to Muse and gives him a threatening look
"I advise you to stay quiet if you want your life saved!"
Muse, seized with fear, precisely remains silent. Pen drives through the night without stopping. Muse, who struggled with sleep to find out where his detractors were taking him, ended up falling asleep. After a long journey that took about seven hours of time, he finally stops at the entrance of a town. Pauline goes down to find Muse who was sleeping in the back of the car. She wakes her brutally. Muse gets up with a start. Before doing anything, Pauline pulls her violently out of the car and pushes her vigorously. Muse finds herself on the ground.
"Never come back to our life, bird of ill omen. Know that the day you seek to return, I will rot your life!" Pauline summons him without any compassion.
Pen throws Muse's suitcase at her and the two Machiavellian lovers hurry back into the car they drive away, leaving a Muse who begs their indulgence in vain.
