CHAPTER 274: THE PROPOSAL
James didn't spill a word about what had transpired. He just flashed a tight smile and steered the conversation in a different direction.
James wasn't naive. He saw right through George's deflection, but he played along. Still, a nagging curiosity gnawed at him. He'd have his men discreetly look into things later.
Hours he was melted away as they chatted, the whiskey flowing freely. By now thoroughly intoxicated, George dug his heels in, refusing to leave. Finally, James, at his wit's end, descended the stairs and practically manhandled George out the door.
Still relatively sober, James cast a sidelong glance at George as they departed. The raw emotion etched on his friend's face was undeniable. With a sigh, James couldn't help but think, "Love. A damn fickle thing."
Sliding into the car, James spoke, his voice low. "Let's head home. And on another note, look into George and his wife. Something's off kilter there. My gut tells me so."
The secretary didn't refuse and nodded before
