CHAPTER 23: SHADOW AND BONE

According to George, Lauretta had been nothing but a shadow, trailing after his conscience, but that was all before things started unravelling. He stared unblinkingly at Arthur, "Did she really do all these things… for me?" The other man's nod of confirmation left George momentarily lightheaded. He had been more wrong than he realized. "She uh…she never wanted it to be a big deal. I believe she thought of those services as part of her responsibility." Arthur paused, breaking the eye contact with George. "She oversaw many things aside from work. She made sure your medications were always available and she personally vetted all your food…I thought it was unnecessary but she loved doing it." He felt like his secretary was mocking him, and there was nothing he could do to stop that. "Why didn't you tell me all this before? And why do you feel the need to make it known to me now?"
