"It's me, Astoria," I called back, my voice muffled by the wooden barrier.
Moments later, Astoria hurried out and swung open the gate. After a quick glance over my shoulder, she ushered me inside. "No one should be tailing me," I assured her. "These old city streets are a maze—I've been everywhere. I'd know if we had company."
She gave a small nod, her tension easing. "Better safe than sorry. Let's get inside."
The interior was just as I had seen from the outside—a cozy, if slightly cramped, living space with a living room, a bathroom, and a kitchen all crammed on the ground floor.
I scanned the room but did not spot Lucas. Turning to Astoria, I asked, "Where is he? Is he alright?"
Astoria gestured upstairs with a troubled look. "Lucas is up there. He's been silent since last night and won't let me near him, but he's eating. I tried to see his injuries, but he's so resistant that I'm at a loss."
I gave a small nod. "I'll check on him."
