Nobody would waltz into danger when you knew what was waiting for you.
After a brief silence, I realized there was no way Lucas would send those girls back. Mulling it over, I faced him and asked, "Are they okay, at least?"
I did not have the guts to ask him what he actually did with the girls, so that is all I could muster.
"They're working in the park," Lucas said, his voice flat, like he was talking about the weather. "As long as they don't leave Mandala, they can live like anyone else."
I bit my lip, "Can I go see them?" I wasn't exactly calling him a liar, but I could not shake my worries. Rebecca had told me about this park. It was a complex place, with people who were there by choice or by force. Everyone had a different story.
The ones here on their own, like Rebecca, worked, sent money home, saved up for a house or a car, or just splurged on whatever they wanted. The forced ones were just money-making machines, stripped of freedom and voice, no better off than beasts.
