Chapter 514 Call It Even
The village was small, and unless someone was really sick, they would just tough it out. So, it was mostly just me here, alone.
Well, not entirely alone. Lucas was there too, out cold. My feelings about him were a tangled mess. I found myself wishing he would just slip away, yet the thought of him actually dying scared me. It was a constant struggle dealing with these mixed emotions.
I just could not bring myself to give him another glance, choosing instead to sit on the doorstep, lost in the view of the mountains and clouds in the distance.
Today was a special day. A kid came by to keep me company. I popped open the plastic box with nothing fancy inside, just plain white rice and some potatoes and cabbage. I caught the eye of the little girl sitting across from me on a tiny stool and asked, "Charlotte, did you get anything to eat?"
