Chapter 509 The Cunning Man
Gregory and the other officers had their guns ready, but they held back, not wanting to risk a stray bullet hitting the wrong person. With that in mind, I started towards Lucas.
"Ms. Scott, don't!" Gregory's voice was sharp with alarm.
I shot him a look that said I had this under control and turned back to Lucas. "Let's swap," I said, nodding at Alice.
Lucas did not budge and just kept backing up toward the stairwell exit, pulling Alice with him. He disappeared into the stairwell, his final words hanging in the air, "You want to switch? Fine. Come in, and lock the door behind you."
I scrunched my brow, stunned by his sly move.
He was locking the stairwell door, making it a real pain for the cops to follow us. Even with officers waiting downstairs, they would not dare make a move with him clutching a pregnant lady like a human shield.
"Come on!" Lucas snapped, seeing me drag my feet.
I bit my lip, torn. If I played along, I would be giving Lucas a free pass to bolt. If I did not.
