Dixon asked why we had gotten a divorce.
And not how we could have gotten divorced.
They meant different things. The first statement meant that he could not bear for us to get a divorce. The second indicated that he wanted to know the reason for our divorce.

I felt that Dixon had not lost his memories.
If he had really lost his memories, he wouldn't have asked me that question like that.
