Chapter 8 Stop!
Mental hospital.
Renee had inquired about the ward where Gemma was in. She quickly walked toward the other end of the corridor after getting out of the elevator.
"Let go of me! I'm not sick! You guys let go of me!"
Across the door, Renee heard Gemma's sharp voice. She was struggling to resist the so-called treatment.
Blood surged up into Renee's brain. She burst into the ward without thinking.
"Stop!"
Two nurses pressed against Gemma, and a doctor held medical equipment for electric shock treatment. Seeing someone break in, they paused and looked at Renee at the door unkindly.
"Who are you? We are treating the patient! Please go out!"
The doctor spoke harshly, looking intimidating.
Renee said nothing but rushed up and pushed away the nurse, rescuing Gemma.
She straightened her back and shouted at the doctor with all her might, "I am her family! You took bribes and illegally imprisoned my mother! Before I came here, I had already called the police!"
Renee came in a hurry with no time to call the police, but now she could only use this excuse to scare them first.
"When the police come to investigate, none of you can escape!"
As expected, the faces of the doctors and nurses all showed fear.
The doctor's face changed several times. He finally cursed, "Shit! Let's go!"
They ran out like avoiding a plague, leaving only Renee and Gemma here.
Renee's tense back relaxed. She breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, no one knew she had lied.
She turned to look at her mother, who was wearing a hospital uniform with messy hair, and felt heartbroken.
"Gemma, are you okay? Did they hurt you?"
Gemma was disheveled, making it unable to see any trace of her past charm. She hung her head. She heard Renee's words but did not respond. Her hair blocked her eyes, which were gradually filled with resentment.
Renee didn't realize something was wrong with Gemma. She cautiously helped Gemma and said, "It's too cold here. Let's go. I'll take..."
SMACK-!
A heavy slap was thrown disgustedly at Renee's right face, and Renee froze all over with a buzzing sound in her ear.
Blood flowed down the corner of her mouth, making her look both embarrassed and fragile.
"How hypocritical! Are you happy to kill your father? It's all because of you that our family fell apart!"
Gemma's turbid eyes were filled with tears. Her emotions were out of control, and she collapsed. She cried to Renee, "Where else can I go if I leave here? Why don't you let me die here? Let me go accompany your father!"
"Gemma..." Renee's heart clenched in pain, her eyes turning red uncontrollably, and her voice choked.
"How big a sin do I have? How could I have such a shameless daughter like you? Why didn't you die? Why didn't you?" Gemma cried crazily, shaking Renee's shoulders wildly.
Renee froze in disbelief as if a sharp knife had pierced into the softest part of her heart, making it bleed profusely.
She lost her mind and let her mother go crazy, turning everything in her ears and eyes into nothing.
With a bang, Renee fainted and fell on the cold floor.
Gemma was dumbfounded, unsure of what to do.
Suddenly, a tall and imposing man rushed into the ward, heading straight for Renee.
"What are you doing?!"
The man had long legs. He picked up Renee and strode out without even looking back at Gemma, his face cold and terrifying.
Then, two men in black came in and said to Gemma with expressionless faces, "Please come with us."
Gemma shrank into the corner, very resistant to them, but her resistance did not work. The men in black directly took her away.
Six hours later, in an advanced ward of the hospital, Renee lay on the bed with a pale face and tightly closed eyes. There was still no sign of her waking up.
Zarek sat on a chair by the hospital bed, his eyebrows furrowed, and the entire ward was filled with cold pressure.
If he had earlier known what would happen, he wouldn't have let Renee go alone. If it weren't for his secretly following her, the consequences would have been unimaginable.
Thinking of that crazy Gemma, Zarek couldn't help but frown.
Steve quietly walked and said, "Mr. Macleod, Mrs. Johnston has already settled down."
"I see."
"Mr. Macleod, there is still a meeting at the company. I just asked the doctor. He said Miss Johnston may not wake up for a while, so..."
Zarek glanced at his watch. It was three o'clock in the afternoon.
"No need. I'll wait here for her to wake up."
"But Mr. Macleod, that meeting is significant. Several major shareholders have already arrived."
Steve was embarrassed. He quickly winked at the attending doctor secretly.
The doctor stood up and said, "Don't worry, Mr. Macleod. Miss Johnston is not in any danger. We will notify you as soon as she wakes up."
Zarek lowered his eyes, pondered for a while, and then got up. He tucked Renee in and then left the ward with Steve.
Just as he walked out of the hospital, his phone rang.
Zarek glanced at it and hung up directly.
But the other party persisted, making five or six consecutive phone calls as if he wouldn't give up until Zarek answered.
Behind him, Steve frowned, knowing without a doubt who was calling.
After a long while, Zarek got into the car and finally answered his constantly ringing phone.
"Zarek, it's not a waste of me making so many phone calls. You finally answered." A playful voice came from the other end of the phone. "You're really busy with important matters, huh?"
Both the driver and Steve automatically fell silent. A faint smell of gunpowder filled the air, and the atmosphere became tense.
"Speak up straight," Zarek was particularly indifferent. He prepared to hang up at any time.
The one on the other end sneered and continued recklessly, "Zarek, Dad often asks us brothers to enhance our relationship. Have you taken his words seriously?"
"I don't have any relationship with you."
Zarek's father, Richard Macleod, had many mistresses and countless illegitimate children. Only some of them had been brought back.
Zarek lost his mother at a young age, and Cyril Macleod's mother, Helen Beckman, became Richard's second wife. After their marriage, Cyril also transformed from an illegitimate son into a legitimate descendant of the Macleod family.
Over the years, Richard had favored Cyril and Helen. They held a high position in the Macleod family.
"You didn't come back to our home first when you were back from abroad but instead went to the small Riv City. Are you still resenting me and Helen, or are you resenting Dad?"
Steve glanced at Zarek with concern. Cyril was deliberately digging a trap for his boss.
Zarek's mother, Paula Flores, was born in Riv City and also buried there. It was natural for him to go to Riv City first after returning from abroad.
Zarek let out a somewhat surly sneer. "Your methods of making others angry are still as stupid as yourself. Don't talk nonsense. Just give Richard the phone."
