The little girl looked up at me with wide, sympathetic eyes. “I hope everything gets better soon.”
Her kindness was almost overwhelming. “Thank you,” I said softly. “I hope so, too.”
The moment the little girl wandered off to play with a few toys scattered around, Christie stood and turned her attention back to me. “If you need anything—food, water, or just to talk—please let me know. I want to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible.”
I nodded, feeling a sense of relief. “I appreciate that, really. I’m just trying to keep it together until the police figure things out.”
Christie gave a reassuring nod. “They’ll find him. Officer Bryan is one of the best. And you’re safe here.”
I took a deep breath, trying to let her words settle in. The sense of safety that came with being in her home was a small comfort compared to the fear I’d been living with. I glanced out the window occasionally, watching the officers as they continued their search.
