Her gaze remained conflicted, but I could see the struggle in her eyes. Finally, she let out a heavy sigh and stepped aside, opening the door wider. “Alright, but you need to be quick. I’ll call the police, and you can explain everything to them. But you have to stay out of sight. I don’t want any trouble.”
Relief flooded through me as I stepped over the threshold into the warm, dimly lit hallway. I glanced around quickly, taking in the simple but welcoming surroundings. The woman closed the door behind me, and I could hear her picking up a phone in the other room.
I took a moment to collect myself, leaning against the wall as I tried to calm my racing heart. The woman returned, her expression a mix of concern and uncertainty. “I’ve called the police. They’ll be here soon. You can wait in the living room. Just try to stay quiet, alright?”
I nodded gratefully, feeling a wave of exhaustion wash over me. “Thank you,” I said softly. “You don’t know how much this means to me.”
