I was about to respond when my phone buzzed. I glanced down to see a text from an unknown number, and my heart skipped a beat when I saw the danger emoji.
The unsettling chill returned as my face fell. I quickly looked around, trying to see if anyone noticed my reaction.
My mother noticed my shift in mood. “Is everything alright, Camilla?”
“It’s nothing,” I replied, forcing a smile. “Just a weird text.”
Ella’s gaze softened with concern. “Are you sure?”
I nodded, trying to sound convincing. “Yes, I’m fine.”
I excused myself and hurried upstairs, but I nearly collided with Austin coming down the stairs. He reached out, catching my phone just before it hit the floor.
“Whoa, where’s the fire?” he asked, looking at me with concern. “Everything okay?”
“Yes, everything’s fine,” I said quickly, though Austin’s skeptical look told me he wasn’t entirely convinced.
