Oliver continued to cup Cliff's cheeks with his large, calloused hands. But the baby wasn't having it. He cried his heart out, his tiny legs kicking furiously as if trying to shove his father away. Oliver let go of his hand. After a while, Cliff lifted his head on his own, though his wailing continued. Grace was stunned. "Darling, how did he manage that?" she inquired. Grace had been teaching Cliff for ages, and he never got past lying there. "Stop spoiling him, and he'll figure things out," Oliver explained. Still wrapped in a towel, Grace crouched at the edge of the bed, watching their son's teary, determined effort. "It looks like I've been too soft on you," she muttered. "Alright. Cry it out. I'm going to get dressed." She left the room, and Cliff lay there, sniffling pitifully. It wasn't long before Oliver's gentle hand stroked his back, soothing him into silence.
