Chapter 6

On this day, Lauren received a call from Manager Sun just after the morning meeting. "Lauren, you have been in Gu's Media for almost a week. You should be familiar with the contents of the evaluation case. You have to explain the evaluation case by yourself, but don't worry as I will head over there to watch you. Apparently, President Gu will also be there, which means he also shows a great importance to our company’s evaluation case, so you must perform well." Lauren was very nervous, she had to do an important job by herself just after she returned to China. After preparing the presentation, Lauren rushed to the meeting room. Since she was the presenter, in order to avoid being unclear in the elaboration process, she read what she had to present from beginning to end again. The people attending the meeting walked in in an orderly manner at the agreed time, Lauren put her hands on her lap trying to make herself look relaxed. Manager Sun and Anna came in at the same time and nodded their heads to each other. As the time of the beginning was getting closer and closer, Lauren's heart was beating harder. The doors were opened once again, this time a familiar figure walked in alongside three other people. Everyone stood up respectfully and greeted them. Terrence walked in. He chose a seat opposite to her and sat down. She could see him for as long as she looked at the crowd. After Terrence sat down, everyone took their seats one after another, Anna announced, "Let's begin." Lauren nodded and began to elaborate. "Hello, everyone, I am Lauren Xu. I am a temp employee in the Data Evaluation Department. The evaluation case I am explaining today is about the value of our food development field in the media market..." After half an hour... "This is my assessment report. Please excuse me if there are any shortcomings and thank you for listening." Lauren completed the elaboration of the evaluation case. The evaluation case was about food, which she had very little contact with before, but fortunately, she did enough work in the time she was given. She didn't lose her momentum in the most critical moments and completed it smoothly. Terrence sat opposite of Lauren and looked at her from time to time. Anna raised her eyes and inadvertently saw Terrence's eyes looking at Lauren, she wondered if the president knew Lauren personally. She remembered Wendy talking about the new employee interview that day, and she emphasized how embarrassed Lauren was. If Lauren made a fool of herself that day, then there was no way she could've passed the interview. With this thought, Anna started to observe the subtle expressions between the two with inquiring eyes, looking for a connection between them. At this time, Manager Sun interrupted everyone's silence after the end, and hurriedly asked with a smile, "President Gu, Director Li, what do you think of this evaluation case?" Anna has been working in the office for many years, she won't let anyone steal the limelight. "President Gu." "Ms. Zhao, this comment—" Lauren interrupted him politely and took a deep look at him, trying to make sure whether or not he remembers her, "President Gu, excuse me, my last name is Xu." The expression on his face hardly changed, his eyes moved slowly. He smiled at her, and there was a flash of ridicule in that smile. Lauren was willing to do anything to be sure that he doesn't remember. If he does remember her, then she will draw a line and make a boundary between the two of them quickly. But he simply didn't care about her anymore, and she was more than willing to play along. After all, she was already a stranger to him. He pretended to suddenly realize. "Oh, right. Sorry, Ms. Xu, I'm not very satisfied with this assessment." He then turned his head to look at Anna, "Ms. Li, please reanalyze this with Ms. Xu carefully." Lauren obviously felt that Terrence was acting like a robot, but he was not easy to talk to, so Manager Sun could only accept his decision. Terrence walked out in long strides. His face was calm, and nobody knows what he was thinking about, and even if they did, they wouldn't be able to understand. The people in the conference room walked out one after another, but Anna and Manager Sun stayed. Anna packed up her things and said, "As a professional evaluator, if you come up with such a flawed result, then I'm sorry, I'm afraid our cooperation ends here." Although Anna's words were harsh, she also knew that in such a big company, no one will adapt to your growth period. One must either work hard to the company's standards, or get fired. Manager Sun's attitude completely turned around, putting pressure on Lauren. "Lauren, this evaluation is related to the performance of our department in the next six months. No matter what, you need to do better next time, okay?" Lauren was embarrassed and only nodded. Manager Sun loosened his tie after getting in the car, his palms were sweaty. He has been in this field for many years, but he has never seen someone as unpredictable as Terrence. Every sentence and every action he made seemed to be special, but it also seemed unintentional. He couldn't read his body language at all. This evaluation case given to Lauren was very important to him as well. If Lauren really messed up, it would be hard to say whether his job would still be stable. He wonders if he had made a mistake choosing Lauren to do this project. He knew Lauren was timid and he could easily push the project onto her, but seeing her results made him regret his choices. Manager Sun thought about it endlessly, but had to accept the status quo.
