Chapter 5 The Girl Who Was Reborn

Carolyn The first thing I noticed was the sunlight streaming into the room and then the soft bed beneath my back. Confusion filled my heart as I looked around the room I was in and wondered where I was. I didn't think Gary would be nice enough to give me an accommodation as nice as this if I had ended up back in his grasp. I hoped not. That would mean my dad had died for nothing. No, I couldn't afford to think of him now. I needed to know where I was first. "Where am I?" I said to myself. As if the walls could hear me, the door opened and a beautiful woman walked in, smiling at me. I forced myself to relax as I stared at her. Gary's henchmen wouldn't be smiling at me like this. "Where am I?" I blurted out. If she was surprised by my question, she didn't give it away. "You are in my house." "Where?" "Miles away from where I found you, if that is what you are asking." I relaxed. Gary wouldn't be able to find me now. "Why?" I asked. "Why?" She chuckled. "Are you asking why I brought you to my house?" I nodded. She shrugged. "You were dying and needed help. It isn't in my nature to turn away from those who needs my help." "Why?" "I'm a doctor." Oh! That explained it. "Thank you. I guessed you removed the bullet and stitched me up." She waved her hand. "Oh! That wasn't me. I'm a psychologist. One of the doctors with me who is a surgeon did that." She wasn't alone when she found me? That explained the voices that I had heard last night when I fainted. I wondered how many they were who had found me and unease trickled back into my heart. The more people who knew about me, the more I was in danger. Any of the other doctors could blab to someone that they rescued a bleeding teenager who was shot. News travel fast and I would be done for if Gary or any of the two men who had shot me heard about it. I needed to leave now. "Um, thank you for your help, doctor."I said. "You can call me Natasha." She supplied, her kind smile still intact on her face. "Thanks for your help, Dr. Natasha." I said, sliding off the bed. "I need to go now though." "Where do you think you are going?" She almost yelled at me as she saw what I was doing. "You aren't fully healed yet. Didn't you hear that you had a surgery? It was done here instead of at an hospital as we didn't know how to explain the bullet wound. You need extra care, girl, before you start jumping around." "I'm sure I will be fine, doctor." I said and hissed as my vision swayed as I stood. I fell back on the bed and groaned, feeling embarrassed at how weak I was. "You still think you are fine?" She asked, her tone teasing me. "I guess I will rest for a while as you said." I agreed with her despite myself. "Good call." She passed a tray to me. I hadn't even noticed it when I saw her walk in. "Here, eat this. Liam said you have to take your drugs when you wake up. Eat, take the drugs and go back to sleep. You are safe here." I doubted that. I didn't think I actually was. If she knew who I was running from, she wouldn't have said that I was safe. I wasn't safe here. I needed to be thousands of kilometres away from Gary to be truly safe. "Thank you." I said, taking the tray from her and putting a spoonful of spaghetti into my mouth. She smiled. "I'm glad you decided not to run away again." "Thank you for saving me." "You are welcome, girl. You should rest now. I would ask what your story is later." I smiled. She said she was a psychologist. I should have known that she would be curious. "Later." I promised, thinking of the lie that I was going to tell her. It was dangerous to let anyone know who really was. "What should I call you?" She asked. "I can't keep on calling you girl." "My name is Amelia." I said. "Hmmm," I arched my eyebrows at her. "Is there a problem, doctor?" "I don't know but the name doesn't suit you." My heart raced with panic. She must really be a good psychologist. Did she know that I just lied to her? "I will be back to check up on you, Amelia. Liam would also be here to check your wounds so make sure you sleep after taking your drugs." I breathed in relief when she used my name and didn't stop staring at her till she walked out of the room. True to her words, Dr. Natasha didn't come in until few hours later. I had slept after taking my drugs and felt refreshed afterwards. There was something about her that felt like I could trust her and I felt myself warming up to her when I saw her. I was even starting to feel bad about lying about my name earlier and it was only caution that kept me from blurting out the truth when she smiled at me. "How do you feel now?" She asked, settling beside me. "Better now, thanks to you." I replied. "Why were you out there? Who shot you?" I was already expecting her to ask so I had my answers ready. "I was captured by human traffickers and broke free from them. They gave me a hot chase and were the ones who shot me when they got tired of chasing me. I was lucky the bullet hit me on the arm." "You poor thing!" She gasped, believing the lie. "I'm glad you are safe now. No one must know you are alive then. They might still be looking for you so you should lie low here for some days before returning to your parents." "I don't have parents to return to." I muttered sadly. She gasped. "Really? What happened to them? Human traffickers too?" I smiled as I shook my head. "No. I never knew who my mother is and I lost my dad recently." At least, that wasn't a lie. "I'm sorry, Amelia. You have suffered enough for a young girl." I smiled. "I'm not that young. I'm sixteen." She snorted. "I'm twenty eight. Argue all you want, you are still young." "I guess." She chuckled. "You guess? Don't be ridiculous." She sobered up. "Where were you planning to go earlier when you wanted to leave since you don't have anyone to go back home too?" I blushed. "I don't know. I only thought of getting myself safe." She shook her head. "You can relax now, Amelia. I will keep you safe."
