"You're absolutely right. We've been wrong from the beginning! We'll have to turn back!" Freya said.
In other words, they had wasted a half day's journey!
Ryan and Freya quickened their pace to make up for lost time. They walked upstream along the river. As Ryan had anticipated, the higher terrain upstream meant that the vegetation was less submerged by the flood. Occasionally, they could even see green shrubs.
Their hopes were reignited when they saw vegetation on the river banks!
Freya suddenly exclaimed excitedly, "Look, there's some guavas!" She pointed to a slope by the river bank. Ryan looked over and saw a guava tree about 16 feet tall growing on the slope.
Part of it had traces of mud from being submerged in water. The submerged branches had withered. However, the parts not submerged were still lush and green!
What surprised them even more was that there were ripe guavas hidden behind the green leaves of the guava tree. They were ripe and glistening!
