Chapter 62: The Path Less Traveled.
Her heart clocked in her throat when the glass shattered. She clung to the phone even tighter when she heard a familiar voice, thick with slurred rage, bellowing from the other end.
"You've really done it this time, you stupid bitch!"
Her eyes slid shut, and a leaden weight settled in the pit of her stomach. It wasn't the first time Jared had called her in this state. It wouldn't be the last.
"Are you even listening to me?" he snapped when silence greeted him. "Huh? You just going to stand there like the worthless piece of trash you are?"
She swallowed hard to make her voice sound like she was in full control. "Jared, you're drunk. I think we should talk when you've sobered up and calmed down."
"'Calm down'?!" The utterly harsh little laugh that followed had her recoiling as though she'd been struck. "I'm perfectly calm, Chloe I have never been more clear-headed in my life, thanks to you!"
The eerie sensation of dread filled her veins, an icy premonition of what would come next.
