CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY – FINAL CONFRONTATION
It was several days before Karina and John were able to corner Sally for the confrontation. She had been uncharacteristically evasive when John mentioned getting together, continuously putting them off with vague excuses.
Finally, he stopped attempting subtlety. "Sally, you're coming over for dinner tonight," he stated in a tone that brooked no argument when she answered his call. "7 pm, don't be late. We need to talk."
Sally must have sensed something in his clipped words, because she arrived at their townhouse precisely on time, Thomas dutifully in tow as always. As Karina ushered them inside, she couldn't help feeling a sense of smug satisfaction at how realistic Thomas played the role of doting husband.
Over glasses of wine in the living room, they engaged in superficial small talk and caught up on relatively harmless workplace developments.
But Karina could see the tight look around Sally's eyes, the slightly pinched quality to her overly bright smile. She knew her old friend
