Chapter 17 – Forget about him

Cassidy did not know how to deal with the emotions she was currently going through. She hadn’t ever felt like this for someone before, and it was messing with her head. Cassidy continued pulling a dish from the drying wrack, wiping it with the cloth, and smacking it onto the counter. She did the same for the pots and pans. Natalie walked into the kitchen humming a happy tune while reliving the fantastic night she had with Gavin. Natalie jumped when she heard the banging of pots and pans. “Cass, what’s wrong?” “Nothing, I’m fine,” she answered as she smacked another pan onto the counter. Natalie walked over and pulled her friend away from the dishes, hoping to save them from getting broken. “Cass, obviously, you are not fine, and you are taking it out on the dishes.” Cassidy huffed as she left the kitchen, walked into the living room, and plopped down on the couch. “Men can be so frustrating sometimes,” Cass exclaimed. “What guy?” Cassidy pulled a pillow over her face and yelled into the pillow, “Jacob.” Natalie quickly sat down beside her friend on the couch and looked at her, confused. “I didn’t realize he made that much of an impression on you.” Cassidy kept the pillow covering her face and confessed, “This isn’t the first time I met Jacob.” Natalie’s eyes widened, and she was shocked to hear that her best friend had kept her in the dark about a new guy. She smacked her friend on the side of her leg. Cassidy dropped the pillow as she yelped at the sting of Natalie hitting her. “Why didn’t you tell me?” Cassidy shrugged, “There wasn’t much to tell the first time I met him.” “What do you mean the first time? How many times have you seen him?” “The first time was when he rescued me from falling into the creek the first day we arrived. He left before I even got his name. So I thought, what’s the point of saying anything? Then I saw him again this afternoon when I went for a walk and ended back at the creek. He told me his name, and when we touched, there was this electric feeling between us, but then he left before anything else could happen. And then tonight, we were sitting on the porch swing, and he looked like he was going to kiss me and then just froze, got up, and left,” Cassidy spouted as she threw her arms up in the air. Natalie sat there and watched her friend. She tried to hide the smirk that was slowly beginning to form on her face. As long as Natalie had known Cassidy, she had never seen her get so flustered over a guy before. She had a feeling there was something more about this guy. Cassidy got up from the couch and started to pace the room. “Why would he make me think he was going to kiss me and just stop right before it happens? I could feel his breath; he was close, and then nothing! You know what, it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t. I’m just going to forget I ever met him and move on with my life.” She said with finality. Natalie just sat there listening to her friend, knowing full well that Cassidy was living in denial. *** Jacob and Gavin jumped out of the truck at the destination, where they told their warriors to meet them. Fifty of the strongest warriors exited the forest, making their way over to their Alpha and Beta for orders. “Thank you for getting here quickly. I sensed a pack of wolves that seemed to be circling the property across the creek just on the other side of our pack line. I don’t want other packs to think this is a weak entry point into our pack land. We need to keep this as discreet as possible, especially since this is happening on the human side of the land. Our main goal is to scare them off the property and keep them from crossing the pack line. Bring any prisoners you can obtain back to the cells for questioning later. Is everyone clear?” “Yes, Alpha.” “Good, now spread out and stay in groups of four. Gavin and I will watch the house; let us know what you find.” The warriors bowed to their Alpha and Beta before shifting into their wolves to protect the land. Jacob’s heart was beating uneasily as he was concerned for his pack and Cassidy. He didn’t like how he ended things, but his main focus was protecting her and the property as he promised. Gavin and Jacob make their way down to a spot where they can keep tabs on the house and have a pretty good view of its surroundings. Jacob squatted down as he stared at the house. “You want to talk about it.” Gavin offered. Jacob yanked at some grass that was beneath him. “What’s there to talk about? I had a perfect chance to make a move, and I blew it because I was more concerned about her safety and the well-being of our pack. She’s never going to want to talk to me again.” He said as he flung the grass from his hands. “You think she’s going to forget you that easily. You’re wrong,” Gavin told him. Jacob sighed as he ran his face over his hands. “She’s never going to accept me; once I tell her the truth and how much our lives are intertwined, she will never forgive me. I should just steer clear and stay away from her.” “Do you think you and your wolf can stay away from your mate?” Gavin asked. Alden: NO! I will not choose to stay away from our mate! Jacob rubbed the temples of his head as his wolf continued to whine and rant in his head. “What choice do I have?”
