Chapter 3 Matthew's Arrival
At Pegasus Racing Club, it had been packed with people, all drawn by the rumor that someone intended to break the record set by the world-class racer Eris. Everyone wanted to catch a glimpse of the person who dared to challenge Eris's legendary record.
Eris, a legendary figure in the racing world, had not been seen for three years and had not participated in any race during that time. Yet, her record from three years ago remained unbroken.
"Clara, it seems you've come at the right time. If you hadn't shown up, people in the circle might have started to forget you," Daniel said with a smile.
"Really? The outcome is still unknown. Besides, breaking a record set three years ago isn't that easy," Clara replied nonchalantly.
"Who are you? Why are you blocking the way?" a sharp, acerbic female voice came from behind.
Clara turned to see two women standing there.
Recognizing the familiar faces behind her, Clara's smile became slightly cold.
"What a coincidence," she said coolly.
The woman who had accused her of blocking the way widened her eyes with barely concealed disdain upon seeing Clara. "I wondered who it was. So, it's Mrs. Garcia? Oh, no, I should say ex-Mrs. Garcia, right? Clara, you and my cousin Matthew are divorced, aren't you?"
"Yes," Clara responded blandly. She had not expected Matthew's cousin to learn about their divorce so quickly. It seemed Matthew had been eager to announce it.
Riley Scott observed Clara's expression, and jealousy surged within her.
When Clara married Matthew, Riley had been consumed with envy. At that time, she hadn't dared to do anything about it since Clara was Matthew's wife.
But now that they were divorced, Riley had no reservations.
"I thought you and Matthew would live happily ever after. How come you got kicked out after just three years? And what are you doing here? What do you know about racing?"
Riley said with an unrestrained sneer, "Clara, you should just go back to being a trophy girl at home."
Clara, a woman who had never touched a steering wheel, came to the racing club. It was laughable.
Seeing Clara remain silent, Riley clung to Lillian Baker's arm with disdain. "You know nothing yet still come here to make a fool of yourself. Lillian is different. She is going to break Eris's record today."
Hearing this, Clara glanced at Lillian. She had heard a bit about the Baker family's little princess, who apparently liked Matthew.
Before Clara could say anything, Daniel's face darkened, and he let out a cold laugh. "You think you're worthy?"
"What did you say?"
Lillian had been enjoying Riley's flattery, but hearing such discordant words, she felt a surge of anger.
"Clara, how can you be so cheap? You just divorced Matthew and you're already seeking out other men. Can't you live without a man? It's a good thing Matthew doesn't like you. Otherwise, I'd be worried for him. Marrying a woman like you would be a constant headache." Lillian sneered.
"What nonsense are you talking about?" As soon as Daniel finished speaking, a well-dressed man approached Clara. "Miss, there you are. We've been looking for you. Please, come with us to our VIP lounge."
Clara followed the man inside, passing by others who greeted her respectfully as she walked.
Riley couldn't understand why they treated Clara so respectfully. Wasn't she just a trophy girl?
Thinking this, she tried to follow Clara to see what was going on.
She pulled Lillian's hand and followed, but they were stopped by staff after just a few steps. "Sorry, miss, the VIP lounge is ahead. You can't go in."
Hearing this, Riley felt embarrassed and reluctantly turned back with Lillian.
Lillian's face darkened as she shook off Riley's hand. "I can walk by myself."
After a few steps, she suddenly halted, her eyes widening in surprise.
It was Matthew!
A glimmer of excitement flashed in her eyes as she ran to Matthew and hugged him. "Matthew, I'm here! Did you get my messages? I can't believe you came to see my race!"
"Matthew, you really came. I didn't expect you to show up," Riley said, unable to hide her excitement.
Matthew's expression shifted slightly at their sudden appearance. What messages?
Suppressing his annoyance, he frowned and looked toward the audience, searching for Clara.
Seeing him ignore her and look toward the audience, Lillian couldn't help but ask, "Matthew, what are you looking for?"
He paid her no mind and continued scanning the audience. He didn't see Clara anywhere.
Where did that man take Clara? Matthew felt a surge of frustration, tugging at his tie, the irritation within him growing stronger.
