"1 million dollars? You really don't hold back, do you?" Clara's eyes were filled with disdain. Aiden was just her nominal father now. Clara had no more regard for him.
"Without 1 million dollars, don't even think about your mother's belongings," Aiden said plainly, his intent clear. He wanted money.
"Is that Clara's voice?" A faint, somewhat weak voice suddenly came from upstairs.
Clara froze instantly. 'It's Grandma!'
Her grandmother, Elodie Taylor, had always been in good health, but now her voice sounded so frail.
"Grandma!" Clara turned and headed toward the stairs.
Laura blocked Clara's path. "Grandma isn't home. You must have heard wrong."
At that moment, Aiden also stood up, his tone indifferent. "So now you're thinking about your grandmother?"
Clara felt a pang of guilt. She had not seen Elodie for years and felt she had let her down.
The voice from upstairs continued calling. Ignoring Aiden, Clara's eyes were stormy with turmoil. "Get out of my way."
