CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN: A SURPRISING VISITOR

I paced back and forth in the sitting room, twirling the remote control I was holding in my hand and gently slapping it against my palm. We've tried dialing Mae's number since yesterday, but she hasn't picked up, and we haven't heard from her since we disclosed the fake news to her concerning the return of her brother.
I scoffed and turned to my mom, who was battling with her phone.
“Mum, you said she believed you," I said, scoffing again.
She raised her brow, diverting her gaze to me.
“Yes, and she said she's coming over immediately. I could even feel the excitement in her voice,” Mom said.
“She’s a bloody liar and deceiver!” I said that and breathed.
“She probably knew we were trying to fool her, and you didn't realize that!” I added, throwing off the remote control in my hand.
“How was I supposed to know that? Of course, you were present during the dialogue over the phone, and you should have detected her deceit, too,” she replied quite harshly.
