Mateo pretended to think hard for a moment. "I'm an adult, and Ash is just a little kid. How could an adult be mad at a child?"
Elysia immediately turned to Bethany, her eyes asking, "Why is Mommy mad at me?"
"So, Ely, when do you plan on forgiving Ash?" Mateo asked again, his voice soft.
Elysia sniffled and said softly, "Tomorrow."
"Alright, tomorrow it is," Mateo said with a nod, glancing at Bethany. "Don't rush her. Just explain it to Ash and let them video call tomorrow. If Ely isn't ready, forcing it now will only make things harder for everyone."
Bethany hesitated but realized Mateo was right. "Okay, tomorrow it is. You'll need to call Ash tomorrow, though."
Even as she said it, her chest tightened. Thinking about how Asher had looked earlier that day made her heart ache, and she couldn't bring herself to tell him they wouldn't talk tonight.
After dinner, Mateo took Elysia to the bedroom to play, leaving Bethany in the living room, pacing restlessly.
