Trystan took a few steps forward, his voice low and serious. "Did you call me here on purpose?"
It was the first time he had ever spoken to Kelly in such a serious tone. She looked up at him, her eyes wide with a mix of fear and uncertainty. She whispered, "Mom is so pitiful."
Trystan's expression softened, and he crouched down beside her. "What's wrong with your mom?"
Kelly shook her head and repeated, "Mom is so pitiful."
He didn't press the issue further. Instead, he gently patted Kelly's head. "Be a good girl. Your mom is probably in a bad mood. I'll try to cheer her up, and everything will be okay."
"Thank you, Mr. Lawson." She heaved a heavy sigh but continued to play.
As he sat on the couch, Trystan couldn't shake off the image of Megan from earlier. She looked like she was drunk, but there was no smell of alcohol in the room. Instead, there was that pungent, unidentifiable odor that lingered.
The odor was so sharp and bizarre, but it was unlike anything he had ever smell
