"Us?"
Jenny immediately shook her head. "Forget it. If we were that smart, we would be rich by now."
But Nate wouldn't give up. He even bugged them through dinner.
"I'm not asking you to do much—just be there. If you can help with some talking, that would be even better."
He turned to Bethany. "This is about the future of Holin's people. If we mess this up, I would feel terrible. Just think of it as helping everyone out."
"What can these two girls do?"Anna scoffed, looking dismissive.
"Mom, they're university students from a big city," Nate shot back without holding back. "Unlike you, who knows nothing and only makes things worse."
Anna didn't seem offended. She seemed to like Bethany and tried to persuade her, "Beth, why don't you help Nate?"
Bethany was reluctant, but both elders were asking. She also realized she and Jenny might be more helpful than the other villagers, so she nodded.
"Alright, but let's get this straight. If we can't help, you can't blame us."
