Kira touched the vest and knew it was bulletproof. ‘I can’t take this. What about you?’
‘I’ll be fine.’
‘You need this more than me.’
Austyn leaned over to put the vest over her head. ‘You are unarmed. Your legs are hurting. You need the protection more than I do. I’ll be fine. Don’t worry.’
Kira couldn’t see his face clearly in the darkness, but she heard the tenderness in his voice.
Not wanting to distract him and waste time with an argument, she put on the vest obediently.
Austyn whispered in her ear, ‘Follow Ryan once the shooting starts. Just keep running and don’t look back. Can you do that for me?’
Kira blinked away her tears and nodded. ‘I can, if you promise me you’ll be all right.’
Austyn stroked her cheek. ‘I promise.’
She grabbed his arm, needing to feel his warmth and strength. ‘Before you do anything foolish, think about the kids. Jennie and Joshua are waiting for their daddy to come home.’
