Chapter 6 - Unbroken Pact.

The audible grunts of a woman reverberated through the dark and desolate room. Her raggedy hair was a mess, and her face a version of exhaustion. She stood between two pillars - her arms outstretched and bound by two unyielding cold metal cords that were connected to the pillars. The metal cords were winding twisted in nature and had spikes coming out from it which further drove into her skin. "Ahrgh!" She let out another painful grunt. Her body healed but the fixed spike only split her skin open causing her to bleed endlessly and wallow in pain. 'Clump, clump!' She heard the sounds of footsteps approaching her direction. She recognized the sound of those heels. It could be only her. A woman came into her view with a cold smile spread on her lips as she asked. "Mera, how are you enjoying yourself?" "Go to hell!" The woman answered without even turning at her. "There's only one of us going through hell and it's not me," she ends with a wicked glint. "You have gotten what you want. I suffer here incessantly. What else do you desire from me?" "Don't use that tone with me, child!" The woman's voice suddenly became cold and authoritative. "You know the rules of this pack, this ancient society that has survived for eons but still, you chose to dishonor the pact." "A pact that abhors love, that promotes isolation shouldn't be in place," Tears streamed down her eyes as she spoke. "If falling in love is a crime, then I'll gladly suffer." "That pact is the reason why humans are unaware of our existence. You don't know this but centuries ago, we didn't have this pact." "I'm sure everyone was happier then." "On the contrary, the humans chased us relentlessly. They would gather and concert all sorts of evil machinations to exterminate our kind. It was through them that we learned we have a weakness to silver," The woman paced around the room. Her face burdened with a grim look, she looked up to the roof after a while. "I remember those nights when the full moon rose and spread its glow around the ethereal skies. Usually, it was a time to howl and praise the moon goddess but we were scared. For we knew that if we howled, the humans would come." "You should have fought! Love is worth fighting for!" "Child, do you think we just sat somewhere and decided to be scared for no fucking reason!" The woman's indignant tone rang across the room. "We fought with all we were worth and for a while, we dominated. For a while, the humans feared us but their tenacity is worse than cockroaches. For everyone we killed, two more took his place. For every one machination we thwarted, five more rose in its place. We had the edge in raw physical capabilities but the humans were much more passionate about extermination. The only way the war would end was if one race destroyed the other." "I bet you feel some sort of honor knowing that you decided to be the bigger one and step off." "In my youth, I wasn't that honorable. It was all my husband's idea - the venerable alpha." "Look," Mera's head dropped in shame. "I didn't know about this history. But I can make it work, not all humans are the same. Jeff is different, in the way he talks to me, looks at me, and treats me. There's no one like him. He won't bring other humans here. I deserve to suffer for breaking the Pack's pact but not Jeff. He's nothing but a good man." "That's precisely the matter I came to talk to you about," A cheeky snicker lit her face. "I don't follow," the lines on her face accentuated her inner dread. "We found your love, Jeff but he seemed to have no recollection about your child." "Ye... Yes," The woman said shakily. "That's because we have no child. That's absurd. Who would think like that?" "Same, I was beginning I was delirious for realizing that some humans kept dying from what appeared to be wolf incidents during the full moon appearances when usually, every veteran wolf was in the pack - watched carefully at that period." The woman's gaze dropped, and sweat fell from her forehead as she beheld the woman before. Her world came shattering down as she feared the next words that would come out from this woman. "But I had Kyle do his thing so your dear Jeff would be chatty. You know Kyle has a knack for torturing people and getting them to spill the secrets they thought they would take to the grave. He's like a therapist but instead of words, he prefers to get physical." "You bastard!" Mera's face was a contortion of pain and hatred. "That's exactly what your child is. I mean the union wasn't blessed by the pack and you were raising it in secret. How despicable!" "Kara... I swear, I'm sorry," Mera began to weep profusely. Her eyes turned red and color drained from her already pale face. "I was so stupid, I'll never do it again. Please, don't kill Jeff. He doesn't deserve it." "Would you look at that?" Kara's evil smile was fuller. "You are different from Jeff. Unlike you, your hubby wasn't willing to part with the information until we took him to death's door..." "No!" Mera wailed uncontrollably. "Yes," Kara adopted a blank expression. "Your mate is dead." "I will kill you! I will fucking kill you! You heartless bitch! I will fucking kill you!" Mera screamed at the top of her lungs, she thrashed against the bonds that held her and struggled to free herself. The hatred she felt for Kara burned deep in her eyes, visible for all to see. "Unfortunately," Kara walked towards her and stopped a few inches from her. Mera struggled and tried to bite her head off but her restraints held her in place before her mouth could make contact with Kara. "You shouldn't whine too much," Kara adopted a cold expression almost as if she had no emotional attachment to the ordeal. "There's always reincarnation. You can pray that you and Jeff be reborn together and I sincerely hope you learn your lesson. A pact must never be broken." Mera looked into her eyes, and she could see it. This woman harbored no real hatred for her or her mate. She only did what the pack expected from her as the Alpha's wife. It was their duty to lead the wolves when her husband wasn't available and also to ensure that every rule was being followed in the letter. "Jeff, I'm so sorry," Mera broke down in tears and cried even louder than she ever did. "The dead cannot hear us. Do not waste your breath. But the living, however can. Focus on that." "What do you mean?" Mera turned at her - her eyes still red from weeping. "Your child is very much alive and based on the nature of the reports, I would say the child has developed proper sexual organs or as the humans would like to say, the child is a teenager." "I still don't understand." "The child must die." Kara declared. "But why?" Mera lashed out. "My child did nothing!" "Your child is a product of insubordination, and the punishment must be given appropriately." "Not even Jeff knows where the child is. Torture me for as long as you want but you'll never disclose the location. My child is long gone." "You underestimate the society. Your child resides in Alaska and is being tracked as we speak," Kara said coldly turned away from her, and walked towards the exit. "Soon, you and your child will reunite... In the grave." "No!!! No!!! Don't you dare touch her!!!" Mera screamed with pain and fear written all over her face. Her husband and now her child! Kara majestically took her steps out of the hall to do what was expected of her.
