Alison slowly lifted her head, her eyes dull as she looked at the police officer in front of her. Her voice was mechanical and lifeless as she spoke, "Just leave it there. I have no appetite." The officer’s heart ached as they watched her. Knowing the girl in front of them was truly innocent in this whole ordeal, it pained them to see her in such a helpless situation. The officer asked once more, "You’ve never encountered the kidnapper before? No memory of him at all?" Alison understood what the officer was getting at—they were grasping for any clues. But how could she remember someone she had never met? It was a cruel line of questioning. She couldn’t even recall how long they had interrogated her the previous day. The questions were always the same, repeated over and over in an attempt to break her down. Alison found it almost amusing.
