Alex's heart pounded in his chest,
The adrenaline surged through his veins as he stumbled through the darkness.
The night had been his ally, shrouding him in its cloak,
Allowing him to move unseen.
But now, betrayed by an errant stone,
He lay sprawled on the cold ground, cursing his luck.
His breath came out in ragged gasps,
His mind raced for options.
"Stop there,"
The commanding voice cut through the silence,
A stark contrast to the quiet night.
The beam of a heavy torchlight pinned him like a butterfly in a case,
Immobilizing him with its intensity.
The instinct to flee was powerful,
His muscles tensed for the effort.
But the rational part of his brain knew better.
They were armed, and he was out in the open, vulnerable.
There was no disappearing act that could save him now.
"Damn,"
He muttered under his breath,
The word was a mere whisper against the clamor of his thoughts.
He had been so careful, so meticulous in his movements.
