Chapter 140 The police raid
Mariama slowly raised her hands, her heart pounding so hard she was sure they could hear it. "I'm just a maid," she lied, praying her voice wouldn't betray her. "I was cleaning late. I don't know anything."
The officers exchanged a skeptical glance. "ID," one of them demanded.
As Mariama reached for her purse, silently thanking whatever foresight had led her to keep a fake ID for just such an occasion, a commotion in the hallway drew the officers' attention.
In that split second of distraction, a hand grabbed Mariama's arm, yanking her towards a hidden panel in the wall. Before she could process what was happening, she found herself being pulled into a narrow passageway, the panel sliding shut behind her.
"Keep quiet and follow me," a familiar voice hissed in the darkness.
Mariama's eyes widened in shock as she recognized the voice. "Gina? What are you-"
"Not now," Gina cut her off. "We need to move."
