CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND SEVENTY NINE - The Threshold of Fate
Erik felt a glimmer of hope. "Then you understand the gravity of the situation. Will you help us?"
There was a moment of tense silence before the Council responded. "We will grant you our aid, Erik Fairchild. But know that our assistance comes with a price. The child, once born, must be brought here to receive our blessing. In return, we will imbue your home with the protection of the forest."
Erik nodded solemnly. "I accept your terms. Thank you, honored Council."
With a creaking groan, the great oak tree began to shift. From its trunk emerged a small, gnarled branch bearing a single golden leaf. "Take this," the Council instructed. "Plant it on the grounds of your home. It will grow into a sapling that will channel our protection."
