Chapter 15

Irene would never relent if her life was at stake. She stared into Jenny’s eyes, and if she made another move, she would finish her without hesitation. In the next second… Clang! Jenny tossed the long knife and sat on the ground after her knees went weak, but she instantly stood up because of how scalding the ground was. She patted her chest and blinked a few times. Then, she squatted down and buried her head in her knees as she whimpered. Irene kept her composure, and she did not intend to comfort Jenny. After about five minutes, Jenny stopped crying. She wiped her tears and walked up to Irene. “Irene, thank you for today.” If Irene had not gotten out of the car to help her, Jenny could hardly imagine what would have happened to her. She did not mention what happened just now. Although she could not clearly see what happened, all she knew was that Irene had pushed those men off the cliff. After a pause, Jenny’s eyes turned red again. “Can you drive me back? I can’t drive my car.” “Sure.” Irene did not notice anything strange on Jenny’s face, so she put away her switchblade and nodded in agreement. Jenny’s negative emotions disappeared quickly after crying it all out as she was not actually hurt. She quickly picked up the food from her car and got into Irene’s car. After she got into the seat, Irene started the Hummer and disappeared into the forest. When they arrived at Celestial Gardens, Irene carried the food in one hand and the unconscious cub in the other. She went straight to the stairwell. Jenny wanted to take the elevator, but after seeing Irene’s toned arms carrying the bag of food and her viciousness when she pushed those men to the ground, she gulped and struggled to follow Irene’s pace while carrying the bag of food. They did not speak until they got to the seventh floor, where Jenny stopped Irene to thank her. Irene shook her head. “No need to thank me. You helped me too, and what happened today was my fault.” If she had not saved the cub, she would not have delayed their time for half an hour, and they would not have met those people. Apparently, Jenny thought of the cub too as her eyes landed on the little tiger. Assuming that Irene did not have prescribed veterinary medicine, she said, “You can feed it more calcium tablets.” “Sure, thanks.” Irene nodded without mentioning that she bought out a whole pharmacy. She said goodbye to Jenny and went home. She then locked the door and turned on the electric gate. After simply building a nest for the cub, Irene went to the bathroom to take a shower. She reeked of blood, and even though she was not particular about smells, she could barely stand it. After coming out of the shower, Irene heard whining, so she walked to the living room to see the little cub stretching its neck and curling up into a ball. It looked like a newborn as its eyes were still covered in a layer of blue film, which made it look harmless. Who would have thought that such a harmless little thing would grow up to eat large animals without blinking an eye? After seeing Irene approaching, it pushed its paw and snarled at her. Irene flicked it and looked at it angrily. “Don’t disturb the neighbors!” She wondered if the cub actually understood because its ears drooped and it stopped making noises. It was so adorable that Irene could not help but rub its head. She thought that it would still be hungry, so Irene took out a can of goat milk powder from the space and mixed it in a bowl for the cub. The little thing trembled as it straightened its body, and with its tail twisted around its backside, it licked quickly with its pink tongue. Irene was relieved to see that it had a good appetite. The most important thing was that it could eat. She had a lot of food, so she did not mind sharing it with the little creature at all. After it finished eating, Irene rubbed its soft ears and coaxingly said, “Hey, little thing. You’ll be hanging out with me from now on.” The cub’s round eyes stared at her without making a sound. Irene playfully pressed its head down and made it look like it was nodding. “Very well.” She rubbed its little ears again. “What should I name you?” She thought hard for a long time until her eyes landed on the golden fur all over the cub. “Why don’t I call you Goldie?” The cub thought, ‘That’s the name you came up with after so long?’ However, it had no choice but to accept the stupid name under Irene’s coercion. Irene played with it for a while before searching online for the type of medicine to feed Goldie after a fracture. She took out the medicine from the space and fed it to Goldie before going back to the bedroom to sleep. The next morning, she woke up from the sound of a muffled thud. “Help! Someone jumped off the building!” Irene was shocked, so she immediately got out of bed and walked to the window to look outside. Bright red blood stained a large area of the green strip outside the building, and she could not help but notice the horrible sight of a pair of broken legs on the sidewalk. There were screams all around, and someone was calling 911 in a panic. Irene was much calmer compared to them. She had climbed her way out of death, so although she was shocked at the scene, it did not make her panic. After looking at it for two seconds, Irene closed the curtains. She picked up her phone and opened the group chat as her intuition told her that something must have happened while she was asleep. Bean Bean: [Who jumped off the building? What happened?] Eugene Cohn: [The person was from our building. Her son was the owner of the car that caught fire yesterday. It seems that they couldn’t rescue her son, so he died last night, but I don’t know what’s going on exactly. Detective, have you heard any news? @Seine Lover] Seine Lover: [Her husband died too. He was robbed near the hospital last night and stabbed seven times. Her daughter-in-law was heading to the hospital when she got the news, but someone punctured her tire and dragged her down to assault her. She committed suicide this morning by slitting her wrists. Sigh, it’s a cruel world. I don’t know when it’ll get better.] A whole family of four died in one day. Everyone fell silent after reading Seine Lover’s message. After a while, someone cursed at those bastards. Tall Jenny: [I used to be quite optimistic that after the disaster was over, the world would get better, but now, I don’t even dare to go out. I don’t know even know if the world will ever change for the better.] Bean Bean: [Miss, don’t be sad. It’ll get better one day.] Seine Lover: [I feel like civilization is collapsing. There have been so many heinous robberies and injuries this week. If the extreme heat doesn’t end, these things will just continue to happen.] Eugene Cohn: [The people in our residence should try to stick together as much as possible. We should pair up when going out. The robbers won’t attack us if there are more people.] Jenny, who had just been robbed, responded immediately. Tall Jenny: [I agree!] Seine Lover: [Me too!] Everyone else followed suit. Irene sighed and put down her phone. It looked like if she ever wanted to go out alone in the future, the chances of her being targeted would be higher. How troublesome!
