CHAPTER FORTY SEVEN SEEKING REFUGE
JADE'S POV
I turn away from him before I can see his face, and I hold my hands to stop them from vibrating so much. The man in question walks away, and I start to calm down, but I freeze again when he comes back. I close my eyes, waiting for whatever is to come, but nothing happens. After a second, I hear something, a ring.
I wonder what it is, but I don't move to find out until it rings again, and I realize that it's a phone—my phone. I hold my breath as I slowly inch my hand towards it. When I finally get a hold of it, I wait a few seconds before I check the caller ID, but it's an unknown number.
I debate whether to pick it up and eventually decide to, so I slowly raise it to my ear. "Hello," I whisper, closing my eyes and tightening my fist in preparation for the moment of truth. "Open the door, or I'll break it," the familiar voice at the other end of the line breathes authoritatively, and I relax my muscles, which are already really tense, just a bit before I turn to the
