“Where the hell are you, Ella?” Sophie huffed in frustration.
Anger has become Sara’s friend lately and she is always so angry. Maybe she needed a little space of her own or some peace of mind.
Which this conference has not provided her but had given her more trouble.
Ella hadn’t returned to the quarters on time, and this was concerning. A knot of unease tightened in Sara’s chest. Ella was never late, especially not when they were this deep in enemy territory. Something was wrong. Without hesitation, Sara grabbed her coat and slipped out of the quarters, moving swiftly through the dense forest toward the meeting place where Ryan had asked Ella to meet him.
The night was still, the moon casting a silvery glow on the forest floor, but Sara’s instincts were on high alert. Every snap of a twig, every rustle of leaves made her tense. She pushed herself to move faster, her heart pounding louder with every step.
