Chapter 41
Darren introduced me to the group.
The man at the forefront nodded slightly in acknowledgment but showed no further emotion as he turned and walked away. After watching them leave, Darren frowned at me. "How did you end up like this?"
As he spoke, he wrapped his arm around my waist. "I'll take you home."
I pushed him away. "No, I can go home by myself."
Seeing my resistance, he bent down and lifted me effortlessly, ignoring my protests and attempts to hit him.
Curious passersby glanced our way, and I felt my cheeks flush. I lowered my head, trying to hide my face. At the same time, I quietly urged him to let me go.
Darren chuckled. "Come on, Cassie. Shout a little louder so that everyone can look at us."
"Get lost!" I hissed softly. "Put me down."
But the jerk remained unfazed. I regretted taking such good care of him. He was now strong enough to carry me without breaking a sweat.
"Put me down!" I protested as my stomach churned. "This is making me uncomfortable."
