Chapter 16

"The phone is my welcome gift to you," Donn said with a smile. At the time, I didn't understand what he meant by "welcome gift". Later, I found out that he was one of my bosses, and I was working under him. He dropped me off at my apartment lobby, and I thanked him with my head lowered. Out of politeness, I asked if he wanted to come up for a cup of coffee before leaving. What I didn't expect was for him to take me up on the offer. "Sure, let's have some coffee before I go," he said, his eyes narrowing playfully as he smiled and smoothly parked the car. I nervously invited him inside. Mom was sitting on the couch watching TV. At first, she glanced over casually, but her eyes lit up when she saw Donn. She practically jumped up and hurried over to greet us. She asked who the gentleman was with a big smile. Before I could answer, Donn introduced himself. "Hello, Mrs. Stark. I'm Donn Lawson, Cassie's senior from college." Mom gave him a once-over. She was clearly pleased with his ap
