I had thought Darren never cared, but these little trinkets didn't have a speck of dust on them.
My eyes lingered on each of the items, unable to tear away. My thoughts raced, and I realized I had never seemed to understand Darren.
I reached out and pulled the third drawer on the left to reveal an exquisite box. As I lifted its heavy lid, a beautiful necklace came into view. I instantly recognized it as a custom piece designed by a renowned jeweler in Fladova.
Next to the necklace was a rare and limited-edition postcard from Faye Logan signed in her bold flamboyant handwriting. At the end of the message, it read, "To Cassie Stark".
My legs felt weak, and I had to grip the edge of the desk to stand upright. Did Darren go out of his way to get Faye's autograph just for me that day? But what had I done to him in return?
Images of Darren's teary expression flashed in my mind. I slumped into a chair and gasped for air in an attempt to alleviate the suffocating ache in my chest.
