I turned to my co-star’s face. He had a look of sourness that was practised over and over again. “It does sit by me, purity,” he said in his fake Southern drawl. “None of it does.”
“I say we burn it all to the ground just for good measure,” I replied, weighing it out until it was all just ash. His voice droned on and on, becoming part of him just as mine was becoming part of me.
“I get that. Believe me, I do,” I said, reaching into my inner Southerner and pulling out the lines. “But here’s the thing, Marshall, there’s nothing I can do about it. We’re just going to have to wait it out.”
I looked at him, but he looked away, marching towards the horse that stood snorting nearby. The ring behind my shoe made a clacking sound against the stone ground as I got closer to the horse. Once there, I reached out my gloved hand to the beast, touching its snout and feeling the way it nuzzled into my hand and flicked its tail in approval.
