"I’m breaking up with you," the text message read.
“What?” I texted back, disbelief creeping into my fingers. “Charlotte, what do you mean? Is this a joke? Are you pranking me? This isn’t the kind of thing you joke about.”
I sent message after message, trying to grasp the reality of what was happening. “Charlotte, babe, my love, what’s going on? Please tell me this is just a misunderstanding.” I began pulling out all the terms of endearment I could think of—sweetheart, honey pie—desperation bleeding into my words. I didn’t even realize how pleading my texts sounded until it was too late. But there was no reply; in fact, the messages weren’t even delivered.
I stared at my phone in stunned silence, as the world around me seemed to disappear.
