Charlotte “You know him?” I jumped, startled when I felt Laura's hand on my back. “No,” I said, the first word that came out of my mouth. “I have no idea who he is. But do you?” I asked, tilting my head to one side. “I have seen him a few times in the apartment, but I didn't know he was the one Richard... Anyway, it doesn't matter.” She led me further to the table, the very one that Damian sat at. “Hi.” She stretched out a hand toward the seated man whose eyes were trained on mine—unmoving and so damn intense I could have melted. Laura cleared her throat, causing Damian's eyes to snap toward her with such speed. He stood up rather quickly to receive her outstretched hand. “You look familiar. I think I know you,” she said, looking back and forth between me and Damian. “But then again, if we had met, I’m sure I would remember.” She waved it off as he accepted her hand. “I’m her friend. Her only lifeline, otherwise she would be perpetually stuck in her own little world.” She patted
