Not wanting to disturb the pair, Madison playfully handed over the water with a teasing look. "Take your medicine first. Deal with your heart-to-heart later. The competition is important."
Theo frowned. "What medicine?"
Sierra took the water and explained in a low voice, "It's painkillers. I'm worried the shoulder injury might affect my performance."
Watching her swallow the pill with a slight grimace, he reached into his pocket.
A staff member clapped her hands, grabbing everyone's attention. "Everyone, please come over to draw lots. The competition is about to start."
Madison worried that someone might accidentally bump into Sierra's injury. To keep her safe, she volunteered to draw the lot on her behalf.
She got number three in the lot, right in the middle—not ideal, but not the worst either.
