"Ms. Nancy, you really dropped the case?" Jonah asked, stunned and confused.
Beside her, Bruce furrowed his brows, only asking briefly, "Why did you drop the case?"
Cindy and Maeve exchanged glances. She nudged Maeve, who, despite still somewhat unwillingly, lowered her head and said, "Yes, we only just received the news from the police today. We were deeply moved and wanted to thank Ms. Fisher properly, but since he's not well, he asked Cindy and me to come instead."
"Nobody asked you to talk!" Still, in a fury, Jonah cut Maeve off, his gaze now soft but expectant as he turned to me. "Ms. Nancy, tell me."
I could feel Bruce's gaze burning into my face. I avoided their eyes, nodded lightly, and responded, "Yes, I dropped the case."
"But why? The case was almost concluded, and the police found the key witnesses and suspects. It was about to be closed, so why drop it?" Jonah asked, his voice filled with urgency and confusion.
