I thanked Mr. Schneider before getting in the car. Jonah asked, "Nance, what did you say to him?"
"It's nothing. I just thanked him for taking care of Aunt Tina and Alex all this time."
I made something up to answer him. Jonah didn't pry.
It took us one hour to drive to the new nursing home. Josh had already been waiting there for a long time. He approached us the moment he spotted our car.
He carried Alex in his arms to look at her. "Alex, can you show me where you were injured?"
"I just fell and scratched myself a little. I'm all good now." Alex acted like she was okay. But when Josh saw the scratches on her arms and knees, he frowned in concern.
"How did you fall?"
"Gil bought me a balloon unicorn. I like it a lot, but the string snapped when we were climbing up the hill. I fell when I tried to grab the balloon.
"Luckily, Gil grabbed me and—" Alex described everything truthfully. But she seemed to realize that she shouldn't mention Gilbert and stopped.
