After a sip of her coffee, she suddenly shifted the topic and said seriously, "Now that we're alone, you can tell me the truth. Who was your boyfriend last night?"
I had expected her to ask this, but her phrasing—"your boyfriend last night"—made it sound loaded with implication.
I shot her a silent look of inquiry.
Caroline raised an eyebrow. "I trust what you said about not having a boyfriend. You only claimed to have one last night because you were with someone else, and Cindy saw you. You had no choice but to lie, right?"
